IMMEDIATE RELEASE Armstrong Supports Smoking Ban; Senate Approval Moves Law CloserSenator Gib Armstrong again voted in favor of the smoking ban bill, saying that it will extend health care protection to many Pennsylvanians working in or frequenting establishments across the Commonwealth. "A smoking ban has been long-sought by public health advocates. Legislators have at last reached sufficient agreement on an approach that makes a strong statement about safeguarding public health. Anti-smoking groups estimate that 95% of the non-residential establishments are covered under this plan, so this is a substantial improvement over the current situation," Armstrong stated. "There are more exemptions in here than many wanted to see, but it still is a major step forward in shielding people from the hazards of second-hand smoke," he noted. The Senate approved the conference committee report by a vote of 41-9, and it now goes to Governor Rendell for his signature. |
