Central Market In Line For Fresh Funding

When Governor Rendell brings his good news tour to Lancaster next Friday, one of the projects getting a substantial boost from the state will be the Central Market, according to Senator Gib Armstrong, a key project advocate.

"Public markets are a popular part of the comeback of cities, and here in Lancaster we have a historical treasure that ranks with the best.  It is the oldest farmers market in terms of continuous operation, and it can be among the 'newest' in terms of comfort for customers and vendors, as important in the future as it has been in the past," Armstrong stated.

"The Central Market is a major attraction at the heart of the city, and the physical upgrades planned ensure it will be known for both good food and a good experience.  A lot of area residents go there frequently, and the additional visitors drawn to the city by the convention center will find convenient shopping there too," Armstrong said.

"Senator Armstrong's leadership and vision, as well as his strong financial background, were key ingredients in getting the necessary funding for Lancaster's Central Market," Governor Edward G. Rendell said.  "His dogged determination to help this landmark get the funds it needs to pay for long-overdue renovations was key in persuading his colleagues to support this project.  This is the right investment at the right time."

"This was a priority project on our shopping list when we increased economic development funding as part of the state budget.  When city officials and I pitched this project, Governor Rendell instantly recognized the value, and he readily agreed to invest state funding.  He is very supportive of the extensive progress we are realizing in revitalizing Lancaster, and his commitments of state dollars are tremendously helpful," Armstrong pointed out.
